These Songs of Ascent are a special group of 15 Psalms comprising Psalm 120 to 134 often also called Songs of Degrees, Songs of Steps or Pilgrim Songs. These Psalms were sung by worshippers as they ascended the road to Jerusalem to attend the three pilgrim festivals and to can learn so much from their journey to joy. We live daily in the realisation that bad things happen all around us and sometimes to us. Being a Christian does not exclude us from bad things or difficult circumstances or failure or pain or heartbreak. But our Father in heaven wants us to have a meaningful and real relationship where we can express what is happening and how we feel about it to Him. And these Psalms of ascent in particular were written to help God’s people to talk to God about their feelings openly but in the context of the security of the covenant relationship between God and His people. In Psalm 121, we are encouraged to ‘Look up’ - in times of both peace and perplexity, in seasons of disappointment and heartbreak, look up and remember who is above all in control and who has overcome the world.
